CITY OF AUCKLAND NOW HOLDS 100,000
URBAN POPULATION LATEST STATISTICS Auckland, showing the greatest increase in urban population in the past year, is now a city of more than 100,000 people. Previously, Wellington was the only city with this distinction. The Government Statistician has made the following computation of the population on April 1, 1928. City Suburbs Total Auckland .. 100,900 104,235 205,135 Wellington . 103,100 24,165 127,265 Christchurch 86,600 16,495 103,*095 Dunedin .. 66,200 16,860 83,060 The independent districts constituting Auckland’s suburban area number 17. Of them, the four North Shore boroughs comprise a population of 22,665. Wellington and Christchurch each have four independent municipalities and Dunedin has five. Greater Auckland has increased by 4,430 during the year, Wellington by 3,305, Christchurch by 1,140, and Dunedin by 805. Boroughs with over 10,000 population are as follow:—Wanganui City, 24,740 (increase 320); Invercargill, 19,380 (1,630); Palmerston North, 19,210 (375); Napier including Taradale, 17,025 (170); Timaru, 15,835 (200); New Plymouth, 14,820 (250); Hamilton, 14.715 (195); Gisborne, 13,510 (170); Hastings, including Havelock North, 11.715 (215); Nelson, 11,100 (70). Since last year Invercargill has risen from third to second place in the list. Whangarei’s population is estimated at 6,950 (increase 235) and that of Thames at 4,760 (15). The total population of the four chief centres is estimated at 518,555, an increase during the year of 9,860; that of 18 secondary centres at 207,475, an increase of 2,870; the aggregate urban population of 726,030 representing an increase of 12,730.
