HIS MAJESTY’S
“THE SILENT HOUSE” Mystery, thrills, blood-curdling situations, and all the subtlety of an imperturbable, ruthless, pagan Chinese Mandarin once again held the audience at His Majesty’s Theatre spell-bound last evening, when Maurice Moscovitch headed an excellent cast in “The Silent House.” With incredibly. swift action, Dr. Chan Fu (Maurice Moscovitch) rules his unfortunate victims. The plot is good, and the actors clever. Reginald Newson, as Captain George Winsford, inherits, unexpectedly, all his uncle’s property and wealth, part of which is concealed in the house. He and his friend, Captain Philip Barty (Roger Barry) arrive to take charge and at once find themselves plunged into a vortex of uncanny happenings. Incidentally, Captain Winsford, and Captain Barty very cleverly provide the relief from the tenseness of the drama. Nat Madison, as Ho Fang, Captain Winsford’s Chinese servant, is exceptionally good and immensely popular with the audience. Miss Bertha Riccardo, as T’Mala, a victim of Dr. Chan Fu’s hypnotic influence, plays a difficult part very convincingly, and George Blunt, as Benson, Captain Winsford’s butler, is also an excellent portrayal of character. ’ The Silent House” will be staged again to-night, and also on Thursday for the last time in Auckland. Definite arrangements have now been made for the company to leave on the XJlimaroa for Sydney on Friday next, after an extended run here.
