New “Army” Head
Will Serve in N.Z. Under (, Old Chief”
BRIGADIER COTTRILL ARRIVES A Warm welcome awaited Auckland’s new Salvation Army chief, Brigadier W. S. Cottrill, on his arrival by the Ulimaroa to-day, after one of the worst passages experienced across the Tasman for years. Brigadier Cottrill, who is to succeed Lieutenant-Colonel Toomer as divisional commander at Auckland, was accompanied by Mrs. Cottrill and their son and daughter. Until his appointment to Auckland he occupied the position of principal of the Salvation Army Training Institute at Troyeville, Johannesburg. Both the brigadier and his wife are well versed in the Salvationist tradition, as their parents were S.A. officers before them. Brigadier Cottrill has served for 16 years in South Africa. Before that he had 10 years’ experience with the Army in England. It will be no new experience for Brigadier Cottrill to serve under Commissioner Hay, the Army’s official head in New Zealand, as he has been with him on two previous occasions—during the commissioner’s term in South
Africa and before that in Britain. Brigadier Cottrill commented upon the intense excitement throughout the Union owing to the matches with the All Blacks. The South Africans are just as much a sport-loving people as the New Zealanders. “Your representatives received a wonderful welcome both at Durban and Capetown, and when I left the approaching matches with the All Blacks were the principle topic of conversation.”
