OYSTER SEASON OPENS
250 SACKS SELL IN FIRST HOUR BEST CONDITION FOR YEARS The delicate oyster is enjoyed by Aucklanders. The season opened this morning with the sale at the Government Depot in Nelson Street. By nine o’clock a large crowd had assembled outside the depot, and in the first hour 250 sacks of oysters were sold out of the total number of 650 sacks. The remainder are going fast. The oysters are in excellent condition, owing to the extra time allowed for them to develop, they are said to be better than for some years. The selling rates are 25s a sack railed or shipped, 24s a sack at the depot, 6s a sugar bag, 5s 6d if the purchaser supplies own bag, and Is 6d a gallon in a paper bag.
During the season supplies will be taken to the depot every other dav in order to keep pace with the demand.
