London Clerk Swims Across Bristol Channel
A Difficult Feat TEMME’S TRIUMPH British Official Wireless Reed. 11.20 a.m. RUGBY, Monday. The Bristol Channel, where the tides and currents are particularly complicated and strong, was swum yesterday by E. H. Temme, the Loudon insurance clerk who swam the English Channel last August. Mr. Temme crossed from Penarth, Glamorgan, to a point near Weston-super-Mare, in 6 hours 35 minutes, thus beating by 40 minutes the time taken by the girl swimmer Kathleen Thomas, who accomplished the feat last year. Miss Thomas was yesterday in the tug which was accompanying Mr. Temme. The distance across is about 12 miles, but Mr. Temme swam 20, most of the way in rough water.
