FLOODING AT MERCER
STORM-WATER ON ROAD NO DANGER FROM WAIKATO
‘‘Although the Waikato River is rising there is no immediate danger of any flood from this source,” reports the touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, who visited Mercer yesterday. He reports that he found the road conditions were such as to cause no undue inconvenience, provided ordinary care was exercised. An embankment was being thrown up near the southern end of the railway station, and between it and the railway line water had accumulated, flooding the road to a depth of about 9in.
Several motorists who attempted to negotiate this storm-water at speed experienced trouble with electric equipment, but those who travelled through the water slowly had no trouble at all. The Public Works Department engineer at Mercer had stated that a channel would b© cut through the embankment to allow the water to drain away. The wet weather caused the usual flooding in the Manga ta whirl Valley along the Pokeno-Paeroa Road, and on Sunday teams of horses were required to pull cars through the deepest place. With the cessation of the rain the water subsided very quickly, and yesterday morning, when the service cars went through, there was only six or seven inches in the worst part.
