HOSPITAL CONTROL

REVISED SYSTEM URGED “THEN YOU’RE A SOCIALIST” (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. The opinion of the Palmerston North Borough Council that there is urgent need for concerted action on the part of all contributing bodies, for the whole system of hospital control to be revised was supported at the Waikato County Council meeting to-day. Mr. W. Newell, chairman, said the council could not support the proposal that every citizen and borough council should have representation, as the boards would be too unwieldy. He pointed out that there were members now on the Waikato Board, and the county had no power to nominate representatives, although it had two council members on the board. Mr. G. Smith said the right of the people to appoint their own members on the board should not be taken away. Mr. T. H. Henderson moved that a reply be sent that the council was in sympathy with the movement. Mr. S. Lye: Are you in favour of the nationalisation of hospitals? Mr. Henderson: I am. Mr. Lye: Then you’re a socialist. Mr. Henderson: Every man should pay equally and the cost should come from the consolidated fund. Finally it was decided to support the suggestion that the whole system should be revised.
