RIFLES HOLD COLLEGE TO A 3-POINT DRAW

RAGGED GAME IN MUD At fhe Showgrounds on Saturday College Rifles and Training College fought out a draw of three all to the accompaniment of driving rain and a bitterly cold wind, the While fifty or sixty odd half-frozen spectators sat huddled together in all the misery of “shelter” of the stand. FIRST BLOOD TCURIFLES Rifles wafe the first to draw blood. Fielding a long kick from Butler, Donald sent the ball out to "Webber, who poddled down-field to go over for a good try. In the second quarter the spectators were treated to the one really good movement of the day. McRae gained possession from a loose scrum and centred. Lawrie came up fast to take over and hand on to Hill, who “tacking” in-field, swerved past three opponents, and galloped across. It was the right culmination to a splendid piece of work. Butler’s kick didn’t rise. Outstanding in the Rifles pack was H. Souter. This player was on the ball from whistle to whistle. He showed a fine turn of speed and proved to £e a packman of some ability. He was ably backed up by Gallagher and Noakes. Gillespie and Donald did all that was asked of them, particularly when on the defensive. Kirk was responsible for a heap of solid work, repeatedly getting Rifles out of tight corners.

For the Students, Butler was decidedly safe, and on at least two occasions gave flashes of brilliant play. His handling in particular easily outdid that of any other player on" the field. Broomfield in the live-eighth line is to be commended for his good work in defence, though on a number of occasions when attacking he either held on too long, or else cut across the field, totally disorganising his back line and putting the chance of scoring at a minus.
