THE QUEEN’S ARCADE
Work has been commenced on a five-storey building next to the Dilworth Building, the first of a series that will comprise the Queen’s Arcade. Accommodation for 11 shops and many suites of offices will be made in this new £40,000 building, which, it is expected, will be completed by January of next year. The arcade, which runs from Customs Street through to Queen Street, where it will emerge between A. B. Donald’s old building and Irvine’s Chambers, has its northern entrance through the new building. With a frontage of 65 feet to Customs Street,
and with a pleasing facade, this imposing structure will be a worthy commencement to such an ambitious undertaking. Interior decorations will be something after the style of Yorkshire House, finishings being made in marble and bronze. The building will be erected in concrete and brick. Plans for the building were prepared by Bloomfield and I-lunt, architects, for Queen’s Arcade Company, Ltd., for whom Samuel Vaile and Sons, Ltd., are acting as agents. The Fletcher Construction Company is the sole contractor.
