FIRE ALARMS ARE MODERN BRIGADE’S EXPLANATION The remark of Cr. T. J. Watts at the Newmarket Borough Council on Wednesday evening to the effect that Auckland was known as the Curiosity Shop of fire services, is not appreciated by the city fire brigade.

Cr. Watts explained this morning that his intention was to convey that the old watch room, which was being brought up to date gradually by the superintendent of the city brigade, was known as the Curiosity Shop of fire services—not the whole of the Auckland system His point so far as Newmarket was concerned was that the city had no right to expect the suburbs to bring their alarm systems up to date till the city’s own system was modernised. He did not wish to reflect upon the efficiency of the brigade. Superintendent W. L. Wilson, of the city brigade, is anxious that no misapprehension is created in the public mind. “The Auckland watch room is the most modern fire alarm system in existence,” he said this morning, “and I would not like the people to have the impression that the service is not efficient,*'
