WOMAN FINED FOR THEFT
TOOK HATS FROM SHOP “MIGHT HAVE BEEN TOO DRUNK” Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. Eleanor Brodie, a widow, aged 55. was fined £5 to-day for the theft of two hats from the shop of Hugh Gilmer, where she had gone with another woman. Her companion was, aonw time ago, fined for receiving. Mrs. Brodie could not then be dealt with owing to having broken her arm and she was not able to appear in court to-day, so a written statement obtained from Mrs. Brodie was put in by the police. Counsel said the defence was handicapped by the absence of accused. It might have been possible to show s%was too drunk to know what she was doing. The magistrate, however, said he had no hesitation in convicting on the evidence before him.
