“DEVELOP TEAM SPIRIT”

SCHOOL CUP FOR COMPETITION TAKAPUNA PRESENTATION The “Devonport Cup” given recently for annual competition by the Devonport Borough Council was presented at the Takapuna Grammar School this morning. Representatives of the council included the Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. Hislop, the town clerk, Mr. E. A. Wilson, Mr. T. Walsh, and the borough engineer, Mr. A. T. Griffiths. The scholars were assembled in the hall where the headmaster, Mr. J. Littlejohn, announced that the cup is to be awarded in an inter-house competition Jm which both athletics and school work will be considered.

The value of grammar schools in training future citizens was pointed out by Mr. Aldridge, who mentioned the responsibility of the borough in training the rising generation and providing proper educational facilities. In awarding the cup the council wished the students to aim at the highest in citizenship. Mr. Hislop reminded scholars that Lieutenant-Commander Sanders, V.C., was a Takapuna boy and he had risen to that rank in the Navy entirely on his own initiative. His name will always be remembered among those of the naval heroes.

In acknowledging the gift, Mr. Littlejohn said the trophy would develop that team spirit so necessary both at school and in later life.
