ANOTHER NELLIE MELBA

Dame Nellie Melba decided not to appear on the stage during the present tour of the Williamson-Melba Grand Opera Company it is interesting to note that another Nellie Melba has appeared in Melbourne with the company. But this one is not yet a diva. She is Nellie Melba Tornari, who was born in Melbourne during the appearance in that city of the Williamson-Melba Company in the season of 1924, and was christened at St. Patrick’s Cathedral amid the rejoicings of many nations’ representatives. Her father is Amleto Tornari, prompter, and the mother is Carmen Tornari, who sings minor parts with the company. Nellie Melba Tornari has not a very big part to play. She appears as Little Troble and has merely to keep quiet, look unconcerned, and wave a flag at that tragic moment when Cho-Cho-San, with her father’s sword in her breast, saves the honour of her house.
