WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER The death is reported from Christchurch of Cecil R- Murray, aged 35, a former Canterbury footballer, who captained the provincial side when they defeated the Springboks. He had been in ill-health for some time. MR. C. F. SHIPHERD The death is announced of Mr. Charles Shipherd, of Puni, Pukekohe, aged 88 years. Born in Cornwall in IS4O, he came to New Zealand with his father, the late Mr. Thomas Shipherd, of Onehunga, when three years of age. Young Shipherd assisted his father in farming operations first in Mangere and later at Rama Rama. Subsequently he and a brother took up sheep-farming near Wanganui. Upon returning to Auckland deceased and his bi-other-in-law, the late Mr. W. F. Buckland, purchased a large block of bush land at Puni about 1878. They established a saw mill on the Waikato River bank and gradually cleared the land. Some 35 years back the two partners acquired the Purapura block of 2,760 acres, land which was owned by the first pioneer settlers of Puni. The partnership was later dissolved, Mr. Shipherd retaining about 700 acres for his own use. He was actively associated with the former Mauku Road Board, and in addition to being the founder of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society, was a past president and a life member. In Masonic circles Mr. Shipherd was a well-known figure. Early in 1885 he was initiated into an Otahuhu lodge, and with its first master, the late Mr. F. H. Hewson, founded Lodge Franklin, No. 2138, English Constitution. He was Worshipful Master in the years 1890, 1895, and 1909, and was also deputy-master in recent years. In addition he was one of the charter members odf Lodge Waiuku No. 92, and a member of the William Fergusson Massey Royal Arch Chapter, No. 61. During the Waikato War of 1863-64, he served as a member of the Otahuhu Light Cavalry. Mr. Shipherd is survived by two sons, Messrs. C. F. and T. S. Shipherd, and one daughter, Miss Mabel Shipherd, all of Puni.
