New Doss House
Warmth and Comfort Given to Homeless SHELTER OPENED A fire blazing in an open fireplace last evening was the first real comfort many homeless and workless men had felt for months. About 30 had presented themselves at the new shelter for men, in Parnell Road, by 10 o'clock. They sat round the fire, drinking cups of cocoa and talking soberly or gayly of their ill-luck. Some had been sleeping out in parks most of th© summer, possessing only the few thin garments they wore. Canon Grant Cowen and Canon Percival James spoke to the men, welcoming them to th© shelter and explaining that a decision had been mad© to refuse admission to drunken people. A well-spoken man thanked th© ministers on behalf of the homeless. Soon after cocoa had been served they went to the clean beds, of which there are 80, and the stretchers must have felt like kings’ couches. The Rev. Jasper Calder and Father Brennan visited the shelter during the evening. Mr. F. Potter is the superintendent of the shelter, and each night four members of the Church of England Men’s Society will prepare the supper.
