WATER SUPPLY CONTROL

ONEHUNGA’S INTERESTS BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS Councillor F. S. Morton drew the attention of the Onehunga Borough Council last evening to the fact that the Auckland City Council was preparing a Bill for Parliament which would give it the control of the water supplies as far south as Mercer. On his suggestion it was agreed to request Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., to see that the interests of Onehunga were safeguarded when the Bill was being discussed in the House. The following recommendations of the council in committee were adopted:— That the council’s accident business be placed with the State Office for the ensuing year, and that the town clerk write to the Mount Roskill Road Board and Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., asking for their support in protesting against the control of the One Tree Hill Domain being transferred to the One Tree Hill Board. Fearing that it was about to lose the use of one of the football grounds in the Recreation Reserve the Auckland Football Association intimated that although the ground' had not been used every Saturday this season it would be fully occupied in future. It was agreed not to interfere with the club’s use of two grounds, but to request the committees of the League and Rugby Union Clubs to meet the council in committee to discuss the question of providing a ground for the League club. In response to a request by the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the council agreed to distribute among as many men as possible the work of beautifying the waterfront, for which the Returned Soldiers’ Association had contributed £6O, and which is being subsidised to the same amount by the council. It is estimated that each of ten men. will be provided with work for three weeks. A petition from 34 ratepayers of Turama Road complaining of the footpaths and asking for more street lights was referred to the Streets Committee. The district fund account is £3,354 in debit. The following accounts are in credit: —Drainage Advances Loan, £173; Waterworks Loan, £399; Destructor Loan, £65. Accounts amounting to £1,744 were passed for payment. A letter was read from the Power Board saying that the complaint of poor street lighting had no foundation in fact and that the lights were all that they should be. Councillor Stoupe said that he had heard residents in one area complaining that the street lights were more often out than alight. The council decided to make further efforts to secure a better service. The Onehunga Kindergarten School Committee was given permission to use the Council Chamber for its monthly meetings. It was decided that the plana for draining the area recently taken over from One Tree Hill should be submitted to Mr. Greville Walker for his approval, and estimate of costs, after which the ratepayers in the area will be asked to sanction the necessary loan. The Mayor indicated that a loan for building permanent footpaths in the borough would also be placed before the ratepayers at an early date.
