Kept Two Baches But Neglected Wife
TAXI-DRIVER GAOLED SEQUEL TO NEW BRIGHTON CASE Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The recent tragedy in a New Brighton bach, when a young woman committed suicide, and a taxi-driver was the * subject of strong comment by the coroner, was recalled in the Police Court to-day, when the taxi-driver, YVm. Alfred Burgess, appeared for failing to maintain his wife. William Alfred Burgess, the central figure in the recent New Brighton bach tragedy, was to-day sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Mr. H. P. Lawry on a charge of disobeying a maintenance order in favour of his wife. Tiie arrears totalled £29S, and the warrant will be suspended, provided Burgess pays off £2 7s 6d weekly. In sentencing prisoner the magistrate said: “You had no reasonable exeuse for not paying this maintenance. You were running two baches at the time when you were letting your wife get on as best she could without money.” Burgess said ho was now working as a truck-driver in the country.
