KEEN RACING

TE KUITFS OPENING DAY DOWNFALL OF THE FAVOURITES SHOWERS in the forenoon boded ill for the opening day at Ellerslie on Saturday of the annual fixture of the Te Kuiti Racing Club, but the conditions during the actual racing were not so bad as they might have been. There were several keen finishes, with followers of the favourite experiencing a lean time,

ONE of the features of the afternoon’s interesting sport was the runaway victory of Star of the East in the Otorohanga Steeplechase, for, after leading at every stage of the journey—he had a 20-lengths advantage at one stage—he finally won easing up a dozen lengths ahead of the favourite. Star of the East jumped beautifully excepting at two fences, and looks as if he will go far at the game. He gave his jockey, H. Dulieu, his first winning ride over obstacles. There was no doubting the popularity of Beau Cavalier after the ’chaser came home in front of a bunch of moderates in the hack mile, for, despite the fact that he was at long-double-figure odds, horse and rider (Foster) received an ovation. Foster had also ridden the winner of the big event, the Te Kuiti Handicap, for whose success Sun readers were well prepared. Tinakoa Avon by a good margin; his double-figure price was remarkable. Wretched Jumping The horses in the Pio Pio Hurdles, or the majority of them, gave a very poor display of jumping, and it was this that really paved the way to Farndon’s handsome victory. The only favourite to score during the day was King Lu, who came on at the right end to win under his big weight. King Lu is engaged at Trentham, and has also been nominated for the Winter Cup at Riccarton. Te Koroke should never have been beaten into second place in the open seven furlongs, and the only other favourite to return a. dividend was Pouri, who had a hectic task pursuing Star of the East. The management of the racing was in keeping with the usual high standard associated with Ellerslie, and the totalisator return must have gladdened the hearts of the officials of the Te Kuiti R.C., the machine handling £ 43,626 s for seven races. At the opening day of the last meeting held at Te Kuiti the totalisator figures for eight races were £15,433. Notes on the various events, together with detailed results, follow:- — Hot One Downed The sport commenced with the Hunters’ Hurdles, nine fulfilling their engagement, but the hot favourite, Pukerimu, was well beaten, failing to see it out. The chestnut carried £1,513, against Importer £736, Marita £649 and Ramblin’ Kid £374. Pukerimu and Mashoor went out to set a merry pace over the first two fences from Importer, Miss Alma and Clockwork. Passing the stands the first time Pukerimu, Clockwork, Rafferty and Importer were in close order, ahead of Marita, Miss Alma, Ramblin’ Kid and Mashoor. Down the back Clockwork and Odin were in the van, closely followed by Importer, Pukerimu and Ramblin’ Kid, and into the straight there was not much between Odin, Clockwork, Importer, Pukerimu and Ramblin’ Kid. Importer finished very strongly to score convincingly by four lengths from Odin, with Clockwork eight lengths back, a head in front of Ramblin’ Kid. Half a dozen lengths away was Pukerimu, and Marita a similar distance back. The Consistent Waltzer Fourteen lined up for the Awakino Handicap, the winner turning up in Waltzer, who was only fairly well backed. Betting favoured Te Koroke £1,515, Archeen £1.221, Hyde Park £1,183 and Waltzer £671. Tukenoa stood on the mark at the start, Archeen hopping out smartest from the inside position and leading early from Athenry, Arch Queen, Hyde Park, Wyoming, Waltzer and Saucy Lass. After a couple of furlongs Archeen was still making play from Flying Juliet, Hyde Park, Waltzer. Wyoming, Takarunga,

Athenry, Harbour View, Te Koroke, Tinoiti and Oscar. Coming to the home turn Archeen held a slight command over Waltzer, Hyde Park, Te Koroke, Oscar, Wyoming and Flying Juliet, and a good finish eventuated. At the distance Waltzer was a length in front of Te Ivoroke, with Archeen and Hyde Park almost in line, and from here the first pair forged ahead, Waltzer winning by a neck from Te Koroke, with Archeen coming again three parts of a length away, third. Hyde Park was right up, fourth, and then came Saucy Lass, Wyoming, Oscar, Takuranga, Flying Juliet, Harbour View and Tinoiti. Tinokoa’s Big Event Tinokoa won the Te Kuiti Handicap handsomely, giving a double figure return, while the second horse, Day Guard, w T as neglected. The money was forthcoming for Thursby £1,071, Queen Arch £BB3, Sir Archie £BOI, Mervette £696, and Auriculus £555. Mervette and Day Guard were the first to become prominent, being followed at the end of a furlong by Master Doon, King Emerald. Tinokoa, Auriculus, Queen Arch, Modest Boy, ‘old Jacket, High Pitch, Quincoma and Thursby. Passing the live-fuf-long peg Day Guard was three lengths clear of Auriculus, with Tinokoa, Judge’s Box, Queen Arch, King Emerald, Mervette, Gold Jacket, Modest Boy. Master Doon, Quincoma, Thursby, High Pitch and Sir Archie next, and

before the turn for home, Tinokoa ran up to Day Guard and had a half-length advantage into the straight, following four lengths behind being King Emerald, with Queen Arch, Thursby, ?.lodest Boy, Auriculus, Sir Archie, Gold Jacket and Mervette next in order. Ridden out Tinokoa made no mistake, winning by two and a-half lengths, from the poorly fancied Day Guard, with half a length to Queen Arch, and four lengths away from the latter was King Emerald. Then came in order Thursby, Mervette, Gold Jacket, Master Doon, Sir Archie, High Pitch, Modest Boy and Desert Glow. The Hack Hurdlers Free use was made of the scratching pen in the Pio Pio Hurdles, only a dozen out of 19 acceptors seeing the post. Archeno £994, Bahadur £941. King Amans £685 *and Farndon £587 were all well supported. Archeno led to the first fence and past the post the first time from Kailioremai, Louis Poto, Scot Free, Lord Bruce, Pekatahi. Farndon and Bahadur. Along the back Archeno and Kailioremai were half a dozen lengths in advance of Scot Free, Louis Poto, Lord Bruce, Bahadur, Farndon, Pekatahi and King Amans, Kailioremai falling at the five fur-

longs, and Louis Poto following suit. Archeno, who was jumping recklessly, began to fade away heading for the straight, where Bahadur, Farndon and Pekatahi headed her. Farndon did best from the last fence to score by a length and a-quarter from Bahadur, with Pekatahi four lengths away third. Scot Free and Archeno were at six lengths’ intervals, with Cullgie and Lord Bruce next. King Amans, who was last, appeared to be a cot case. Foxhound fell at the first fence and Fane at the third. A Runaway Wi#* Only half a dozen contested the Otorohanga Steeplechase, and backers went strongly for Pouri, £1,291, Mangani, £984, and Star of the East, £ 877. As a race it a poor sort of affair. Star of the East went to the front after clearing the first fence, and on the hill the first time was a dozen lengchs clear of Pouri, with Rahepoto, Royal Form, Hangawera and Mangani in close order. Over the stand double the leader had , increased his lead to twenty lengths, Pouri being eight lengths in front of Mangani, Royal Form and Hangawera. Star of the East had a life at the six furlongs, his rider nearly being put out of the saddle, while here Royal Form’s rider came off and Mangani stopped. From this out the leader was not troubled, going on to win by a dozen lengths from Pouri, with Rahepoto two hundred yards away third. Hangawera was another hundred yards away fourth. Beau Cavalier a Winner Beau Cavalier sprang a surprise in the Te Kumi Handicap, paying a double figure dividend. There was big money for Hassock, £1,915, Rangikokiri £1,279 and Eager Rose £1,216, the winner carrying £328. Miss Myrtle, Fiery Lad, Beau Cavalier, Pompeius, Storm Fiend, Eager Rose, Golden Wedding, Mountain Guide, Hassock and Blue Spear was the order at the end of the first furlong, and at the five furlongs Beau Cavalier was just ahead of Abbot’s Delight, with Eager Rose, Pompeius, Blue Spear, Miss Myrtle, Fiery Lad, Golden Wedding, BlueSpear, Glendowie, Plane Pearl, and Nassock next. Turning for home Beau Cavalier was clear of Eager Rose, Pompeius, Bluespear, Miss Myrtle, Storm Fiend, Abbot’s Delight and Plane Pearl. Beau Cavalier shook off all challenges in the straight to beat Eager Rose by two and a-half lengths, the latter being a neck in front of Pompeius. Mountain Guide finished fourth, coming from third to last at the half mile, and then finished Hassock, Miss Myrtle, Blue Spear, Plane Pearl. Still Jim and Glendowie. Rangikokiri broke down during the race. The Final Sprint

A nice field of 11 came out for the open sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap. Backers went strongly for King Lu, £2,080, while there was fair support for Town Bird £1,408, Dave £1,252 and Hoariri £922. A good start saw King Lu, Hoariri, Wyoming, Town Bird, Serang, Bahama and Festina Lente leave the barrier in that order; but at the half mile Town Bird was making play from Lorient 11., King Lu, Wyoming, Hoariri and Dave. Into the straight Town Bird and Lorient 11. were on terms, being followed by Dave, King Lu and Bahama. Once straightened up King Lu came on again and won from Dave by two lengths, with Bahama half a length away third, and Festina Lente fourth. Hext to cross the line were Town Bird. Serang, Lorient 11., Wyoming and Hoariri. Following are the results: HUNTERS' HURDLES Of £150; 2 miles. 2 IMPORTER (H. G. Donald), b g, by The White Knight—Golden Import, aged, 10.0, J.
