Chickwheat Runs Up to Best Form
RACING AT_ ASHBURTON (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Ashburton County Racing Club held its winter meeting to-day in fine weather. As a result of recent rains t he track was not conducive to fast times. A Successful Debut Roscrea, who was making his first appearance in public, was installed a firm favourite for the Novice Plate, and after a thrilling finish he was awarded the verdict by a short head. First Raid quickly took up the running, and ho led across the top from Bon Raid. Bight Hearted and Roscrea. Turning for homo there was no change in the leading positions, but a furlong from the post 3'-»ight Hearted held command. A little farther on Roscrea ran up to Bight Hearted, and in a close finish beat the latter by a narrow margin. First Raid was half a length away third, followed by Philanderer. Roscrea, whose special mission to Kandwick will be the A.J.C. Derby, ran very green, but there is no doubting his gameness and he should perform well in his Wellington engagements. Roscrea is a. two-year-old son of Rossendale (sire of the brilliant Rampion), from Medley, and thus ranks as a half-brother to Bimerick. A Waiting Race After waiting on the leaders for a mile in the Byndhurst Handicap Trot, Warepa put in his claim, and though hard driven over the last furlong he won nicely from Our Bird, who was never farther back than third. Bingen Patch began fast and led to the mile post in 2.19, where he stopped. The favourite, Travis Ax worthy, finished fourth. Among those who raced as if they will do better next season were Heroic, Travis Axworthy and Awa-iti. One for Despot Waihertfo, with Kills in the saddle, wound up favourite for the Moreton Hack, but liis rider lost an iron soon after the start and from then on never looked a winner. Despot hopped out from the barrier smartly, and turning for home he showed the way to Greyfinch and Solfello. Despot was hard ridden over the last bit, and in a good finish beat Greyfinch by half a length. Solfello was three lengths away third, followed by Beaming. The Mainspring The Dromore Steeplechase was considered to bo a duel between Royal Fashion and Oriflamb, but the winner turned up in the aged gelding Mainspring. Hyperion ran off at the first obstacle, and at the brush fence at the top of the straight Royal Fashion fell and brought down Matuipuke. Oriflamb, who was making his debut over country, went out with a big lead early, and though it seemed only a matter of his standing up to win six furlongs from home, he tired badly over the last bit. Mainspring led Oriflamb into the straight, and after crossing the last fence drew away from him to win by four lengths. Captain Sarto, the only other horse to finish, was three lengths away third. Ran Up to Form Chickwheat, who had been galloping in excellent style on the tracks during the week, revelled in the holding track in the Mayfield Handicap, and easily beat Ronaki by half a length. Ronaki made the early running lrom Zaragoza and Bronstell, but Chickwheat ilosed on the leaders three furlongs from home. Ronaki was first to turn for home, but when straightened up Chickwheat easily hit the front and went on to score a very decisive victory. Zaragoza was a length and ahalf away third, followed by Bronstell and Town Bank. Ellis, rider of Town Rank, lost his stirrup leather early in the race, and was of no assistance to his mount, who limped badly in his preliminary. Tight Finish in Trot Moneymor© won the Winchmore
Handicap after a real battle with the two-year-old Wrackeen over the last furlong. Had the latter been favourably placed in the early stages she would have won. Moira and Bingen Patch made the pace. Imperial Thorpe was prominent at the bend for home, but he stopped badly over the last furlong. Warepa went a great race from 132yds behind to fill third place. The first half-mile was compassed in 1.12 2-5, and the last mile in 2.24 3-5. Last to Lancer Lancer was made a pronounced favourite for the Maronan Handicap, but after apparently having every chance ho was beaten itj a close finish by Solfello. Solfello was the early leader, and turning for home he was closely attended by Lancer. The last named got to the front inside the distance, but Solfello came again over the last 25 yards, and in a thrilling finish won by a short head. Waihemo was four lengths away third, with Tom Glen nearly 100yds away last.
