PACIFIC CABLE LINE THREATENED MERGER NEGOTIATIONS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association.) Reed. 10.20 a.m. OTTAWA, Friday. A new and stinking featxire of the cable-radio merger negotiations came to light with the notification of the Marconi Company to the Canadian Pacific Telegraph Company, that with its expii'y on November 10 the contract between the companies will not be renewed, but will be replaced by an exclusive business arrangement with the Canadian National Telegraphs. The close of relationship with the Marconi and the Eastern cable lines will result in the diverting' of a vastly increased business to the Eastern lines, which would reach Australia and New Zealand more rapidly than over the Pacific cable. It is feared that this will subtract heavily from the Western route. The expii-y of the proposed merger lease in 10 years might leave the Pacific cable without business. This phase is being considered in London.
