PROMINENT ACTOR DIES IN AUSTRALIA
James Lindsay, a skilful English actor, and a member of the Margaret Bannerman Company, died at a private hospital in Melbourne on June 9. Mr. Lindsay was a sound character actor, and developed his gifts in that direction as a member of many famous companies. He had visited Australia more than 20 years ago. From 1904 to 1906 he was in Nellie Ste-wart’s company, and from 1906 to 1910 he was under the management of Meynell and Gunn (a firm which was afterwards absorbed by J. C. Williamson, Ltd.). Recently Mr. Lindsay appeared in both productions by the Margaret Bannerman company at the Comedy Theatre. He played Arthur Fenwick in “Our Betters” and Baron Stein in “Diplomacy.” He was a son of Major Charles Douglas Lindsay, and for some time he was in the army. His first appearance w r as at Norwich in 1894 as Sir George Orreyd in “The Second Mrs. Tanqueray.” After engagements in England he went to America, and then came to Australia to join Miss Stewart in such plays as “Sweet Nell of Old Drury,” “Old Heidelberg,” and “Pretty Peggy.” He played many parts with Meynell and Gunn. Returning to England in 1910, he appeared under many managements, including those of Arthur Bourchier, H. B. Irving and Iris Hoey.
