OLD CLOTHES “DRIVE”

WELL-ORGANISED PLAN 1,000 WORKERS TO HELP “If people realise that by giving us an old suit of little or no value to themselves, they are saving some poor person between two and three pounds, or, as it were, increasing his income by a few shillings each week, then our drive will be a success," said Mr. R. Glover-Clark, vice-president of the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen's Association, at a meeting held yesterday to discuss the old-elothes "drive” to be held on Saturday, July 14. About 350 ears and over 1,000 workers will help. The city has been divided into 60 districts and the North Shore into ten. Each will be worked by 10 men having six cars at their disposal. All the clothing will be taken to the central depot at the Drill Hall, Rutland Street, where any necessary fumigation and sorting will be done before any goods are passed on to the needy unemployed in the city. The churches are being asked to announce the drive from the pulpits and picture theatres to do the same on the screen. A great deal of time will be saved if householders have the parcels ready, and have all boots tied in pairs. About 2,000 pairs were received during the last drive and it was some months before the last were Anally matched. A collection of money will be made at the same time under strict supervision.

This drive is being organised in a community spirit. At. last evening's meeting were Sister Esther, Sister Hannah, Adjutant Gordon, the Rev. Jasper Calder and representatives from the Onehunga Ladies’ Benevolent Society, Dorcas Society, Returned Soldiers’ Association, Central Mission, Albert Street, Waterside Workers, Salvation Army Men’s Social section, and the Auckland Ladies’ Benevolent. Society.
