NEW REGENT

“THE LAST WALTZ” “The Last Waltz,” a charming story based on the beautiful piece of music, of Oscar Strauss, will be shown this evening at the New Regent Theatre, with a strong cast of actors. The Balkan country in which this story is laid is governed by an elderly widowed queen, whose will is of iron. She has a very soft spot in her heart for the Crown Prince Alexis, who will eventually succeed her. Alexis is a hefty laughing cavalier, who is an allround sport, and the finest shot in the country. Alexis has been officially betrothed to the Princess Elena of Avonia by the old queen. He has never seen her, nor has anyone else in the country besides the old queen. One day the news comes that the princess is staying at Castle Anuscheff, just like an ordinary schoolgirl on a vacation. The Minister informs Alexis that he must go to the castle to pay the Princess a formal visit. The Prince sends his aide. Dimitri, to the castle with a letter announcing his impending visit. The next day Dimitri rides off through the country. Near the castle he sees a wonderful looking girl riding on horseback. He is instantly smitten by her, and from then on he is a rival with the Prince for the hand of this beautiful brunette. The second attraction on the programme will be "The Showdown.” starring George Bancroft and Evelyn Brent. "The Showdown” is the story of a man whose footsteps have been dogged by spies from wealthy oil companies and who has seen success snatched from his grasp time after time by these scheming interests. When, at length, he has outwitted them and is about to reap the reward of his toil, j there comes a test of courage and | honour such as have never confronted i him before. His method of answering this test makes one of the most dramatic stories which has ever been filmed. Heading the cast supporting Bancroft are Evelyn Brent, Neil Hamilton, Fred Kohler, Arnold Kent and Leslie Fenton. The musical .side of the programme will be in the capable hands of Maurice Guttridge, director of the Regent Operatic Orchestra.
