£4,000 A YEAR

PENSION FOR EX-SPEAKER DECISION OF COMMONS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A. —United Service) Reed. 2.30 p.m. LONDON, Wed. In the House of Commons, the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, in accordance with precedent, moved that a pension of £4,000 a year be paid to the ex-Speaker, Mr. J. H. Whitley. Mr. J. H. Clynes (Labour) moved to reduce this to £I,OOO. He regarded £4,000 as unjustified. The amendment was defeated by 224 votes to 103. An earlier British Official Wireless message read: The announcement that Mr. J. H. Whitley, ex-Speaker of the House of Commons, has declined a peerage, has caused little surprise among his intimate colleagues in the House. They knew that he desired to retire altogether from legislative and political duties on relinquishing his post in the Lower House. It is generally assumed that Mr. Whitley will receive some other honour from King George, whose desire to comply with the request of the House of Commons that some signal mark of the Royal favour should be conferred was communicated to the House of Commons by the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, yesterday.
