“SULLIVAN NIGHT”
MUNICIPAL CONCERT Departing from its usual programme, the Municipal Band declared for an “AH Sullivan” night last evening, and it was a success, in spite of the weather. The conductor, Mr. Christopher Smith, had selected with care and forethought, with the result that the programme of instrumental and vocal music was representative of the best in the famous Savoy light operas, in which Gilbert and Sullivan set up new standards of entertainment. The band played the “Mikado” overture delightfully, and followed it with a selection from “Princess Ida.” Other numbers which were enthusiastically encored were selections from “Yeomen of the Guard” and “Patience.” Miss Myra Monk sang “My Dearest Heart” and “The Moon and I” (“Mikado”) with grace, and Mr. Ernest Snell gave baritone songs, including “The Blind Ploughman” (Clark) and “To Anthea” (Hatton). Mr. Leo Whittaker was an able accompanist.
Can you imgaine Myrna Loy smearing her beautiful face with burnt cork and playing a dusky siren in Warner Bros. Master Picture “Ham and Eggs at the Front”? Those wonderful eyes of Miss Loy’s should indeed flash under burnt cork make-up, and make her a most convincing negro vamp. “Ham and Eggs at the Front” should prove one o i the most novel offerings of 1928.
