IN THE RAIN

ELLERSLIE GALLOPS CANDIDATES FOR TE KUITI Unpleasant climatic conditions prevailed for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, heavy showers falling throughout. Trainers had the use of No. 3 grass, and the sand, the going being heavy after a copious rainfall during the preceding 24 hoiy*s. The visitors are now beginning to put in an appearance, and those who were seen out in useful tasks this morning were To Monanui, Gold Jacket. Mangani, and Desert Glow. A large contingent will probably arrive this afternoon. No. 3 Grass Looking a picture of fitness, King Emerald was accompanied by Eager Rose in a bout over six furlongs, the pair recording 1.21 3-5, with little between them at the end. King Emerald was doing it comfortably, however. After pacework on the sand, Te Monanui and Dave were partnered over five furlongs in 1.7, striding over the first furlong in 12 4-«, and two in 26. Both can be given credit for doing it well. Rahepoto and Kameliameha covered a round in 1.50 1-5, the former showing to advantage at the finish, although both were easing up. Notwithstanding that Hoariri has not had a severe preparation owing to soreness, he struck out 'well in an essay over half a mile, showing that he has lost none of his ability in the heavy going by recording 53 for the journey. One of the most improved hacks at headquarters is Mountain Guide, who showed to advantage by finishing ahead of that good track worker Storm Fiend at the conclusion of six furlongs. In 1.20 1-5. This was one of the best gallops registered during the morning. With his customary dash, Beau Cavalier strode over six furlongs in 1.29, not being asked to do his best. Master Doon and Archeno were associated in an effort over six furlongs in 1.22, the initial two furlongs taking 26 1-5. Master Doon, who has been going along nicely in his track work, had a couple of lengths’ advantage at the end. Abbott’s Delight moved well within himself, over six furlongs, in 1.24 3-5, while Muscari was allotted an easy half-mile, not being timed. The Sand Sir Archie, Huepheno and Bahama were in company over six furlongs, the last-named being allowed to secure a. break on his companions at the commencement. Sir Archie and Huephano subsequently overhauled the leader and about a couple of furlongs from home Heuphano eased up, leaving Sir Archie and Bahama to go on and finish on terms, the time recorded being 1.21 2-5. The merits of the gallop went down i to Sir Archie’s credit. Pekatahi and Gold Jacket were asked to go together over a round, the last seven furlongs taking 1.41 2-5, with Pekatahi in advance of his companion at the post. With very little ground separating them at any part of the journey, Mangani and Desert Glow travelled over seven furlongs in 1.38 2-5. Frank Loomb has the pair in great heart for their engagements. Kauri Park had an advantage over Llewellyn when the pair concluded a round in 1.53 1-5, but both were noticeably easing up. Piet covered the last seven furlongs of a round in 1.40 2-5, and did it well. Looking all the better for recent racing, the jumper, Star of the East, galloped a round in 2.6 3-5. Potoanui finished well clear of Foxhound at the conclusion of a round, the last mile of which took 1.55 3-5. Foxhound was eased up toward the finish. Rafferty and Clockwork were companions over a round in 2.6 1-5, Rafferty drawing away toward the end of the gallop. This jumper has been getting through his tasks in great style lately.
