READY IN A WEEK
ACTIVITY AT ST. JAMES THEATRE “ARCHIE” ON JULY 5 Such work as the installation of effect lighting and the moulding and painting of ornamental cornices are now occupying the attention of the 110 workmen engaged on St. James Theatre, which is fast nearing completion. Though the auditorium is still filled with a mass of scaffolding and few seats have yet been put in, it is quite possible to visualise the effect when the theatre is ready for the public. It is difficult, however, to imagine that, in a week’s time, all will be prepared for opening night and the staging of such a pretentious show os "Archie.” with which musical comedy the theatre will make its debut. “Archie” is one of the most successful musical comedies ever presented in New Zealand, and has even eclipsed, in southern cities, the excellent records of its predecessors, “No. No. Nanette,” and “Lady, Be Good.” Elsie Prince and Jimmy Godden, of the Lon-
don Musical Comedy Company, are the leads, and neither of them requires any introduction to Auckland audiences. In “Archie,” Miss Prince has material which admirably suits her talents. Her dancing, singing and acting are all well known. Jimmy Godden, who takes the title role, supports most of the comedy on his most capable shoulders, and his gentle whimsicalities will be eagerly awaited by all who were so well entertained by his work in “No. No, Nanette.” The dancing of the ballet is said to be distinctly good, and a word must be said for the settings of the play, the final scene being one of the prettiest imaginable. The box plan opens at Lewis Eady. Ltd., on Monday, but reservations may be made by mail. Special facilities are being provided for parking cars in Lome Street, where an attendant will be on duty. By arrangement with the City Council the street has been raised three feet, so that the pavements will be on a level with the theatre entrances.
