FLOWER PAINTING
LECTURE BY MRS. VIGERS A very interesting address on the art of flower painting was given by Mrs. Vigers at a meeting of the art section of the New Zealand League of Penwomen. The particular value of tone, and the necessity and advantage of always keeping the background subordinate to the main subject, in this class of painting, was mentioned by Mrs. Vigers. She spoke of the advantage of painting in the background, especially of flower pictures, first, and not after the flowers. By the latter method difficulty and disappointment in getting the tones deep enough was often experienced. By having the background to paint against the depth of colour desired was seen straight away. The superiority of the Japanese in flower painting was mentioned, and she stressed the prominence they gave to the decorative side of art. Mrs. Vigers spoke of several noteworthy artists in flower painting and exhibited specimens of their work. At the conclusion of the lecture Mrs. Macky, hon. general secretary of the New Zealand League of Penwomen, thanked Mrs. Vigers for her interesting address.
