TWO PRIZE PLAYS
LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN Some months ago the League of New Zealand Penwomen held a competition for one-act plays, and two of the winning entries were “Our Friends’ Friends,” by Mrs. Alary Stuart Boyd and “The Flaw in the Amber,” by Airs. Ethel Schmitt. The large number of entries received were a striking indication of the achievements of league members in this branch of their art, and the public is to have an opportunity on Friday of seeing these delightful plays presented, in conjunction with many other original items, at the league’s first public recital, to be held in the Lewis Eady, Ltd., hall. The plays are being presented under their writers’ supervision, and the cast of characters provided, as far as is possible, by members of the club, others of whom form the excellent orchestra, whose items are a feature of the programme. The first presentation of “Horses of the Dawn,” a song written by Airs. Laird Cook (Alarieda Batten), and “Aloon Canoe,” by Airs. Alary Osborne, should be an attractive number. Aliss Etta Field will be the singer, and two Maori songs of Airs. Kaihau’s composition will be sung by Airs. Harold King. Several other examples of the practical work produced by the Penwomen’s League will be seen in a sketch by Jean Boswell, to be interpreted by Miss Linda Murphy, and poems by Airs. Edna Graham Alacky and Isabel Alaud Peacock© (Airs. Cluett). Altogether, the public is promised a most unusual entertainment, and the programme, which has been arranged by Mrs. Nello Porter, should attract a large audience.
