MORE CONCRETE ROADS WANTED FOR TAKAPUNA
LOAN PROPOSALS ENDORSED BY RATEPAYERS “Concrete roads are the only type that will stand tip to pres, nt-day traffic,” said Mr. J, W. Williamson. Mayor of Takapuna, at a meeting of ratepayers last evening, in bringing forward proposals to raise a loan of £28,100 for roading and storm-water drainage. The amount is made up as follows: Concreting the metalled portions of Iving Edward Avenue, Baysw, ter, £3,057; of Walters’s Hill. Belmont.. £3,121; Belmont corner, £500; ami of the main road round the lake, £14.012; formation of East Coast Road on Sherriff’s Hill, in concrete and bitumen, £2,609; storm-water drainage. Kitchener Road, £1,597; and Cecil Road area, £2,074; the balance of about £230 will be applied to raising the loan. It was stated by the three speakers, the Mayor and Messrs. J. K. Close and A. M. Gould, members of the council, that maintenance of the present surface in passable condition cost £ 1,446 last year, and this amount would be increased through formation work to £4,000 this year. Interest and sinking fund on the proposed loan would. <>n the other hand, amount to only £2.100. Maintenance of the new concrete roe.is would be only a small fraction of the large sum spent annually at present on the metal roads, and would set free a sufficient amount to put down th* side roads in a more permanent material. If the poll is not carried the cost of works for the year will necessitate ;,n increase in the rate —not yet struck — of id in the £l. The drainage work is necessary to preserve public health. The council has been threatened with proceedings if the danger through storm-v. ater flooding is not removed. The Public Works Department and the Local Government Loans Board agree the estimates of cost are reasonable. The allocations for each piece of work will appear on the ballot paper and prevent any sums being diverted. A resolution endorsing the council's proposals, proposed by Mr. P. J. Dawson, president of the Takapuna Central Ratepayers’ Association, was carried.
