COTTAGES RANSACKED AND BURNED BY THIEVES
THAMES MAN’S LOSS HEROIC EFFORTS TO SAVE THE BUILDINGS (From Our Own Correspondent) THAMES, To-day. Ono cottage was totally destroyed by fire and another partly destroyed in the same way near Thames recently. The owner of the cottages. Thomas E. McLeay, estimates his loss to be about £3OO. It is believed that the cottages were raided by thieves, who afterwards set fire to both buildings. Mr. James H, Fisher, who first saw the cottages ablaze, rushed across from his home and did wliat he could. The first cottage was . a mass of flames when he reached it, and it was impossible to do anything. He turned round to find that the second cottage nearby was also burning. Obtaining some buckets Mr. Fisher worked heroically for two hours and eventually saved the second building. After the fire it was found that a gramophone, blankets, a*d other goods had been stolen from the cottage which was saved, and it is supposed that similar thefts were made from the other building. The cottages were situated on Coast Road, Tararu, near Thaines.
