In the first sets of the match at Wimbledon in which he defeated F. T. Hunter (America), E. D. Andrews (N.Z.) on three occasions needed a point to win the set, yet Hunter broke through. In the third set Andrews was more patient and accurate, but both men were tiring. TN the fourth set Andrews nursed his A strength, but in the final set he went all out, and playing a dazzling backhand ran to 4—l. Hunter found new energy and made the score 5—4. He was three times within a point of winning the set, but Andrews m %- nificently recovered, and won after four deuces on a double fault. Andrews led at 6 —5, and in the final game ran to deuce. A great net shot gave the New Zealander vantage, and he won a popular victory with a very fast shot down the side line. Further results: MEN'S SINGLES Second Round Cochet (France) beat Hopman (Australia), 6 —l, 6—4, B—6. The impression was created that no Australian ever gave a more creditable performance at Wimbledon than Hopman. Time and again, when Cochet had ;he game point, Hopman returned aces. He has everything that makes a world-beater except experience. His audacity thrilled Wimbledon. Nobody else of Hopman’s physique has ever displayed such a service.
