Destitute Men Sleep Under Grafton Bridge
distress in the city appeal for assistance A youth of 19, after sleeping in the open for three nights, appealed to Canon Grant Cowen for shelter. There are others, quite destitute, who nightly doss beneath Grafton Bridge or in the Auckland Domain. “Common decency demands that we should do something for these men. guch a condition of affairs cannot continue without some effort being made to help these unfortunate fellows,” says Canon Grant Cowen, who to-day asked readers of The Sun to assist in providing shelter for our less fortunate fellow-citizens. A committee has taken an empty warehouse at 49 Parnell Road, and it is hoped to open a shelter there on Monday. Urgently required are 80 stretchers, 80 pairs of blankets, and £IOO in cash (for rent and wages for a caretaker). It is also the intention of the committee to provide the inmates of the shelter with hot cocoa bei’ore retiring. It depends entirely upon the citizens of Auckland whether the shelter will bo opened or not. The committee must have assistance. Canon Cowen will gratefully acknowledge any donations toward the fund. Blankets and stretchers may be sent to 49 Parnell Road.
