HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Support was given the proposed establishment of an agricultural high school in a resolution passed last evening at the annual meeting of the Auckland council of the New Zealand Horticultural Society, at which Professor H. H. Corbin, presided. It was urged that such a school, other than a technical or grammar institution, should be founded in or near Auckland as soon as possible. It was reported the next Dominion conference would be held in Christchurch on a date to be fixed to coincide with the conference of parks superintendents, which would probably be held in August. A resolution was passed protesting against the damage committed on Rangitoto Island by the cutting of trees and shrubs for firewood. It was decided to request the Harbour Board and the licensee of the quarry to take drastic action against employees committing unnecesary vandalism.
The election of officers resulted: President, Professor H. H. Corbin; chairman, Mr. J. Hunter; vice-chair-men, Messrs. T. L. Lancaster and D. A. Hay; lion, secretary, Mr. X. R. W. Thomas; committee, Messrs. W. S. Hill, S. J. Elliott, A. G. Sainsbury. R. Morrison, F. H. Leonard, G. W. Wright, W. H. Rice, A. J. Brown, G. A. Green, F. Carr Rollett, and W. J. Wernham, and Mrs. Brownlee. The report stated that a number of diplomas, as provided for in the Horticulture Act of 1927, had been issued to persons residing in the Auckland district, while it was hoped to commence a series of lectures shortly, as a number of candidates for examination were offering. A native plant section had ben inaugurated during the year, membership not being limited to members of the institute. t
