PARTRIDGE AND SNIPE
COMING FROM INDIA ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY Chuko partridge and snipe from India are to be imported by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society through the help of Mr. J. R. Hughes, of the A>omoay Natural History Society. Mr. Hughes, who attended the society’s meeting last evening, described both birds as being excellent sport, and he offered to make arrangements, on his return to India, for the trapping and shipping to New Zealand. The society decided to apply for permission to import the birds, and it voted an expenditure of £IOO for the projecst. The light fines imposed by magistrates on shooters of hen pheasants and game out of season were commented on, and concern was expressed. It was decided to ask the Minister of internal AJCairs to take steps to have the minimum penalty for each offence fixed at £?«>. It was reported that the number of licences issued for the shooting of game chis season was 2,045, or 350 less than the number issued at this time last year. Probably 100 additional ixcences would, be taken out before the season closed. The Mr. C. M. Gordon, stated that the Railway Department’s proposal to charge freight on trout fry cans and ova would mean an additional expenditure of £JLSO a year. Mr. J. Elliott: I think this is a very silly policy on the part of the Railway Department. The Chairman. Mr. F. E. McKenzie: We should liberate more in the Arapuni and Waikato districts to cut down the freight charges. Consideration of the charges was left to a committee.
