“WE LEARN NOT FOR SCHOOL BUT FOR LIFE”
TECHNICAL COLLEGE MOTTO The motto “Vitae non scholae discimtis” (“We learn not for school but for life”) was adopted at a meeting of the Seddon Memorial Technical College Council yesterday for the school. The staff and committee had discussed the question and submitted four appropriate quotations to the council. The coat-of-arms and the school motto is to be placed over the stage in the new assembly hall, now nearing completion. Mr. G. Brownlee considered the inscription should be in English, as those learing trades in the college would not remember a Latin motto, meaningless to them. A motion to that effect was lost by four votes to three. The furnishing of the assembly hall and the gymnasium is estimated to cost £770. The pupils have offered £2OO toward this expense from their fund derived from concerts and sports fees. An application for a grant of £l5O from the department toward equipping the gymnasium has been refused, but as yet there has been no reply as to whether any grant toward the hall furnishings will be made. The question was referred to the Finance Committee.
Mr. J. Vernon was appointed instructor of the painters and decorators’ class and Mr. A. J. Campbell was placed in charge of the electrical instruction department.
