AFTER THIRTEEN YEARS

OLD RIVALS MEET AGAIN FIRST SENIOR RUGBY ROUND ENDS IX a good all-round Rugby programme, City will try to maintain old traditions by upsetting Ponsonby at Eden Park to-morrow. In the other matches, Manukau and Grammar Old Boys will meet in what should be an attractive curtain-raiser, and Varsity will play College Rifles at Victoria Park, Marist v. Shore, and Grafton v. Training College being the other fixtures. The senior matches will conclude the first round, except in the case of Manukau and Training College.

The match between City and Ponsonby is of some interest, in view of the fact that these clubs have not met on the football field for 13 years, though in past years, as all old football enthusiasts will remember, they were great rivals for club supremacy. Both clubs have turned out some great players in their time. On the Ponsonby side such players as Dave Gallaher (captain 1905 All Blacks), Reg. Masefield. A. Braund, W. Doran, “Bolla” Francis, George Murray, O. Riley and others, and on the City side such players as George Smith, Tyler Brothers (“Bubs” and Billy), Lance Todd, Charlie Seeling, Bob Magee, George Nicholson (afterwards of Ponsonby fame) and a host of others. Both club teams on different occasions went on tour to Sydney, and made a name for themselves throughout Australia. Ponsonby has had un unbroken line in its existence, but City became disorganised shortly after the outbreak of the war, and finally disbanded. Last season City marked its revival by annexing the “B” grade senior championship, and this year returns once more to its rightful place in the “A” grade. Ponsonby’s calibre has been well-known for the last few T years, but City is quite capable of turning the tables on any team in the present competition. Considering the club has only entered upon the second year of its revival, it has done remarkably well. A win on Saturday against Ponsonby would be popular and extremely gratifying to those who have worked hard for the City Club’s re-establishment.
