SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

RECEPTION TO MR. BENNO MOISEIWITSCH There was a large attendance at the Lyceum Club last evening, when a rej ception was held by the Auckland So- ! eiety of Musicians for Mr. Benno Moiseiwitsch, the celebrated pianist. The lounge was prettily decorated with large bowls of foliage and masses 1 of flame-coloured flowers, a bright and very attractive setting being arranged. Mr. Moiseiwitsch was received by Dr. Phillips, president of the society, and members of the council. Another distinguished guest was Mr. Hgerton Lowe, examiner for Trinity College, who arrived this week from England. In welcoming the famous pianist, Dr. Phillips said he had heard him play about five years ago, and since then he had become world-famous. Although New Zealand was only a very young country, with only 100 years of civilisation behind it, they hoped some day it would produce an artist of the ran of their distinguished guest. Art, said Dr. Phillips, knew no country, and no race. It was there for all the world to acclaim. A delightful programme of music had been arranged for the occasion. Miss Etta Field sang a group of German songs by Hugo Wolf, also ‘Schweigen,’ by R. Strauss; and “The Soldier’s Bride,” by Rachmaninoff; and Mr. Barry Coney sang Vaughan Williams’s “Silent Moon.” Handel’s “Larglietto” and two Russian folksongs arranged by Kreisler were played on the violin by Miss Jean Allen, Miss Judson and Mrs. Osborn played the accompaniments. Among those present were: Mr. Stuart Boyd, president of the Auckland Society of Artists, and Mrs. Boyd, Miss Alice Law, Mrs. Boult, Mr. Egerton, Miss Carr, Mrs. Archdale Tayler, Miss Ina Bosworth, Mrs. A. Macandrew, Mrs. and Miss Plummer, Miss A. Hansard, Mrs. Bloy, Miss Lewis. Mrs. Luscombe, Mr. Sutherland, Mrs. Cox and Miss Cox, Misses E. and R. Hood, Mrs. Singer. Madame Towsey, Mrs. Prime, Mrs. JJyecroft, Mrs. Fitehett, Mrs. Hesketh, Miss M. Hooker, Mrs. S. Jackson, Miss Richardson, Miss Eastgate, Miss Ida Hooker, Mrs. Nelson Banks.
