Outward Bound

Hulks go to Funeral Pyre ELINOR VERNON AND POLLY Outward bound for the last time, a dismantled hulk, which was once the stately barque Elinor Vernon, wallowed down stream early this morning behind a tug. She was to be stranded on the rocks at Rangitoto to the eastward of the beacon and burned. Her days of usefulness even as a store ship for coal are ended. The ship was for many years engaged in the American-New Zealand cargo trade, bringing case-oil-from New York and returning w£th kauri gum and generar cargo. When her sailing days were over she became a coal liLilk at Lyttelton. She was towed to Auckland in 1916. The masts, donkey-engine and machinery were lifted out of the vessel at Prince’s Wharf yesterday and her holds were filled with imflammable rubbish. To-morrow the Polly, once a Norwegian barque, will share the fate of the other hulk. She broke her back on the reef below the old railway wharf at Whangarei in 1909 and was later converted into a hulk at Auckland. The Polly is having her machinery lifted at the King’s Wharf to-day.
