TRAGEDY OF PHTHISIS
STRICKEN LABOUR LEADERS MEN WHO HELPED MINERS MARK FAGAN, one of the best union secretaries this country ever knew, is dying of miners' phthisis,” said Mr. H. E. Holland M.P., in his address last night. In mentioning that the dread disease had seized several other well-known figures in the Labour movement, Mr. Holland recalled that the installation of the water-jet machine, which had served to reduce the danger in the mines to-day. had been largely due to the efforts of Messrs. Fagan, R. Semple and Parry, who had taken machine* up to Parliament Buildings, set them up in front of the House, and demonstrated them on stone procured from the building contractor.
