The sand track was utilised by most of the trainers. who elected to give their charges a jog. J. Bullock, riding Sister Beatrice, and with Dillon Huon on the lead, traversed several circuits at a useful pace. Both of the Taranaki candidates bear a well-trained appearance. C. Willetts, with Kolmar and the pacer Uramic, indulged in sound joglng work. The pair look ready for their engagements on Saturday. Quality Looks the Part C. Donald put in an appearance with Quality, Henry Logan, Harry Audubon and the trotter Kempton. All were jogged and no fault can be found with their condition. Quality looks a picture. , D. Withers’s team, comprising Peter Swift, Great Actress and Real the Great, did several rounds at a comfortable bat. The Mark Memorial Handicap candidate bears a %vell-sea-soned appearance. A. Frost was present with Talent and Repute, but very little was asked of them. They are well forward, and the trotter has built up well as a result of her recent racing. Luvan was given solid pacing work over several circuits, and handled the going in good style. A. Julian’s mare is in fine fettle for her engagements. Free Advice Well J. Bryce, jun., was on the scene with Parkwood and the Auckland-owned filly Free Advice. The latter was given sound exercise, and moved pleasingly. Free Advice will be bracketed with Sister Beatrice and Dillon Huon in the Marconi Handicap. Leo Berkett gave Imprint useful work in the saddle, and the Nelson candidate shpwed no signs of his recent leg trouble. He is nice and robust and may be dangerous over the shorter journeys. Maxegin, under Ben Jarden s charge, was not asked a question, but the imported horse’s appearance was the subject of favourable comment. Walking exercise was the portion of F. Holmes’s team w Logan Chief, Ta.laro, Tom Thumb and Harvest Child, while D. Warren was also present with the juvenile trotter, First Wrack. Logan Chief has not looked better for some time, and will be bracketed with Tom Thumb and Talaro in the'big race. J. Shaw’s string. Native Prince, Jewel Pointer, Western King, Uncle Bert, Great Change and the two-year-old trotter, Koro Peter, put in an appearance, but were restricted to walking exercise. W. Head did likewise with The Shrew and Raima. Roma Bingen, with a light boy up, trotted several circuits at a solid clip, and pleased her supporters by the manner in which she did her task. WORK AT MANGERE GRASS TRACK IN DEMAND W. J. Tompkinson and M. B. Edwards requisitioned the motor horse conveyance of X. Cunningham and took their charges u» Manger*, where

they had the advantage of a work on the grass track. Despite the heavy rain which had fallen the circuit was in fair order. Tomkinson’s team comprised Dalmeny. Pageant, Lingfield and Young Blake. All acquitted themselves well in their tasks, but the trotter pleased most by the resolute way he did his work. Edwards gave Neerson and Harold Thorpe a good spin and both pacers put dash into their work. They are in splendid condition for the carnival. The Mangere-trained Betty Moko and Peter Grattan also took the opportunity to have a work on the grass. Betty trotted solidly and Peter Grattan paced in his best style. Native Star an Absentee The popular and high-class trotting mare Native Star will Dot be a competitor at the meeting.
