TOWN-PLANNERS SEEK TO SAVE VOLCANIC CONES

REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT The executive committee of the Auckland Town-Planning Association last evening decided to approach the Government with a view to having the quarrying on the volcanic cone at Mount Albert stopped. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, said that the Railway Department was taking scoria, which seemed a great pity, especially as an expert had described the cone as one of the most perfect specimens he had seen. The committee recently communicated with the Manukau County Council asking for details concerning Ifc* quarrying of volcanic cones in the council’s area, and a reply vras received stating that it was unable to supply information. It was df cie.ea to write the council again pointing out that the object of the inquiry was to obtain facts and not offer c riticism. The association desired to assist m every way it could with suggestions. It was also decided to append to the reply a list of local bodies which had complied with the association s request. The end would be disaster, said tn® chairman, in referring to the fact that many local bodies were preparin-town-planning schemes, irrespective c* each other. One of the vital factor of successful town-planning was cooperation.
