IN HARMONY
YOUNG AND OLD SING TOGETHER CHORUSES AT STRAND A few years ago in England there was a community singing contest, and Mr. Jones, a small, unimpressive looking man, had entered as one of the rival conductors. Finding efforts to dissuade him useless, his friends showed him how to open his mouth to its fullest extent, and hew to show his back teeth in efforts to draw a maximum volume of sound from the audience. But on the day Mr. Jones mounted tc his platform, and looking quietly round, said, “Let us sing,” and there arose such a volume of singing as had never before been heard. The audience were all married men. glad to escape their wives' restraint for an hour. They were not all married men at the iStrand Theatre to-day, but the singing was hearty. Inky office boys rubbed elbows with successful business men and old greybeards, and shrill feminine voices added their quota to the bursts of song. “My Blue Heaven” brought forth a good effort from the lighter and more youthful voices, but it was on the hymn, “Abide With Me,” that young and old joined with deep and mellow effect. Conductor Vernon Drew waved the baton at the community singing today. Mr. Frank Sutherland and Mr. Birrell O'Malley were heard in solos.
