WOMEN IN POLITICS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The report of the year’s work, presented at the annual meeting of the Women’s Political Association, held in the Priscilla Tea Rooms last evening, showed that satisfactory progress has been made, and that the membership had increased. The president, Miss Ellen Melville, spoke of the year’s work, and pointed out that politics meant not only the activities of Parliament but also most phases of our national life. Regarding the position women took in public life. New Zealand was far behind other civilised countries. It was their duty as an organisation to interest as many women as possible in politics, not from any particular point of view as frofn the general aspect and as regarded their participation in the public life of their country. Officers were elected as follows: President, Miss Ellen Melville (reelected) ; vice-president, Mrs. Franklin; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Burlinson; committee, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Middlebrook, Mrs. Holingsw'orth. Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Poison, Mrs. Seymour Wells, Miss Quayle, Miss Jackson and Miss McLeod. After the business proceedings a lecture was given by Mr. Stallworthy, who spoke of the part women played in the public life of the countries he had visited, especially in the United States. Lantern views of scenes among the Rocky Mountains were shown.
