Obituary

MRS. ISABEL PETERKEN An old New Zealand resident, Mrs. Isabel, Peterken, of Papatoetoe, has died at the age of 81. Born in the Hutt district Mrs. Peterken was a' youngest daughter. Her parents arrived in New Zealand in 1840. In 1869 she married Mr. F. H. Peterken and they lived in various parts of New Zealand. Mrs. Peterken is survived by her husband, now 86 years of age, 11 children, 24 grandchildren and two great-grand-children. MRS. A. 0.. KNIGHT Mrs. Knight, wife of Dr. A. Osborne Knight, died at Mount Albert on Sunday, at the age of 68. Born in Auckland, Mrs. Knight was the eldest daughter of Mr. G. W. Owen, a former shipping merchant, who came to Auckland from Prince Edward Island, Canada. She married in 1884. Mrs. Knight was actively interested in many social and religious organisations. She was president of the Y.W.C.A. and vice-president of the W.C.T.U. for some years. She was actively connected with the work of the Baptist Sunday school and was on the committee of the Manurewa Children’s Home. During the war she was a Red Cross worker. For the past four years she had been in poor health. Mrs. Knight is survived by her husband, three sons, Dr. Allan Knight, Mount Roskill; Mr. W. O. Knight, Te Puke: Mr. Cedric L. Knight, Rotorua, and four daughters, Mrs. Percy Gwilliam. England; Mrs. F. M. Stephenson, Mount Albert; Mrs. A. B. Wilson, Epsom; and Miss Beryl Knight, Mount Albert. There are 14 grandchildren. MR. THOMAS COLLINS Mr. Thomas Collins, of Graham Street, city, who has died at the age of 89, was born in Dublin. After spending several years at sea he came to New Zealand in the ship Gladiator in 1860. Landing at Nelson, Mr. Collins later settled at Port Chalmers, where he was married. On coming to Auckland he carried on a business in Wakefield Street for two years, but then went to Parihaka, Taranaki, where he supplied provisions to the settlers until raiding Maoris forced him to leave. Returning to Auckland he went into business in Lome Street and later was in business in different parts of New Zealand and Australia. He returned to Auckland in 1900. Mr. Collins is survived by his wife.
