SALVAGED LAND TO BECOME PARKS
DEVONPORT PROGRESS PUBLIC MEETING ARRANGED | Two big areas of land salvaged from Shoal Bay went to Devonport through the arrangement with the Auckland Harbour Board. Each area is about 19 acres in extent, one being at Narrow Neck and the other below Melrose. The Narrow Neck land has been in possession of the borough for 38 years, but beyond the provision of tennis courts nothing has been done to develop it as a park and recreation area. The Melrose Park has been entirely neglected, though in 1912 the ratepayers sanctioned a loan of £ 5,000 to de velop it. A cautious borough council, however, declined to raise the money. The Devonport Borough Council has revived the idea of utilising the larpd and has set aside the Poppy Day funds, which, with subsidies, amount to about £240, for the purpose, provided the residents of Melrose will subscribe a similar amount. The project has been enthusiastically taken up, and a public meeting in the Congregational Church Hall, Victoria Road, has been arranged for to-night. Representatives of the Borough Council and the Melrose Ratepayers’ Association, will explain the park scheme, which is to develop a football field as a beginning and to construct sea walls
