YOUNG GIRL ESCAPES FROM INSTITUTION
HARBOURED BY ELDERLY MAN CRIMINAL OFFENCE (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. At a special sitting of the Children’s Court yesterday a case was heard before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., which draws attention to the fact that people harbouring or assisting children escaped from charitable homes or other institutions are liable to punishment under the law. John Edward Bell, aged about 50, pleaded guilty to harbouring a young girl who escaped from a Christchurch institution, and to a further serious charge in connection with her. Bell, after lengthy evidence, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on the first charge, and on the second was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
