SAFE-BLOWERS AT WORK
DAMAGE IN BREWERS’ OFFICES HAUL AMOUNTS TO 15/Press Association INVERCARGILL, Sunday. The offices of Roope and Company, brewers, Mary Street, were entered at about 2.30 this morning and a large safe was blown open by gelignite. The force of the explosion drove the door of the safe 12ft across the room, smashing a table to matchwood, breaking windows and tearing a hole in the brick wall on the opposite side of the room. Saturday’s takings were not in the safe, which contained only 44s in petty cash. A quantity of silver and copper was found scattered about the floor, and it is believed that the safe-breakers did not secure more than 15s. The safe also contained the company’s books, three of which were badly mutilated. The remainder were intact. A telepxione which was on the table fell to the floor, connection being made with the exchange, where, it is said, voices could be heard. A black mask was found in the yard. Entry was effected by smashing the glass panel on the door and then turning the lock from the inside.
