Rain interfered with the county cricket matches in several instances. Middlesex, in its first innings against Essex, declared with four wickets down for 435. Haig made 63, Hillick 82, Lee 105 and Hendren, not out, 126. Essex’s first innings yielded 246 for five wickets. Eastman made 69, Russell 60. The game was drawn. Surrey’s first innings against Sussex yielded 226. Ducat made 101 not out and Tats took five wickets for 82. Surrey’s second innings closed for 256, Tate taking four wickets for 45, and Gilligan four for 46. Sussex made 357 in its first innigs (Wensley 97. H. Parks 59, Langridge 77). Sussex won by an innings and 5 runs. Yorkshire, in its first innings, against West Indies, made 179, Griffiths taking six wickets for 46. West Indies’ first innings closed at 56 for three wickets. The game was drawn. Kent's score in its first innings against Warwickshire was 519 for six wickets, declared. Hardinge made 20ji, and Ames 109. Warwickshire made 119 in its first innings, Freeman taking six wickets for 51, and Woolley four for 26. Warwickshire followed on and made 106, Woolley taking six wickets for 52, and Freeman four for 37. Kent won by an innings and 294 runs. Leicestershire, in its first innings against Derbyshire • made 120, Slater taking five wickets for 29. Its second innings yielded 144 for six wickets, Armstrong 51. Derbyshire declared its first innings closed with eight wickets down for 224 (Worthington 121). Derby won on the first innings. Hampshire's first innings against Nottinghamshire yielded 253 (Brawn 69, Mead, not out, 89). Larwood tiook six wickets for 66. Its second innings closed at 116 for six wickets. Nottinghamshire, in its first innings, made 387 for six wickets, and declared. Carr made 57, Walker 53, Payton 129, not out, Lilley 52, A. Staples 57. Notts won on the first innings. Lancashire, in its first innings against Gloucestershire, made 316; Watson not out 149. Gloucestershire’s first innings yielded 120, Eddon taking five wickets for 40. Gloucestershire followed on and made 167 (Smith 51) Eddon took five wickets for 60. Lancashire won by an innings and 29 runs. Cambridge University, in its first innings against Northamptonshire, made 381 for eight wickets, and declared. Turnbull made 69, Longrigg 51, Seabrook 84, Lonfield 90. Thomas took four wickets for 68. Northamptonshire made 169 in its first innings, Liddell scoring 74. Robins took four wickets for 39. Northants followed on, and made 175 (Walden 60). Cambridge won by an innings and 37 runs.
For Glamorgan against Somersetshire, Ryan took four wickets for 60 and Mercer five for 58. For Somerset, White took eight wickets for 50, and Cresswell six for 49. Glamorgan won.
