KOffIMARAMA SCHOOL

NEW GATES OPENED ENTERPfHSfNG COMMITTEE The erection of massive iron gates, flanked by pillars and walls of roughcast concrete and bearing the school coat of arms, completes the programme of improvements put in hand by the Kohimarama School Committee. They were opened yesterday by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board. Other improvements carried out during the past four years include the construction of tennis and basketball courts, football grounds, the erection of a flagstaff and general garden improvements.

Yesterday Mr. Burns, who was accompanied by three other members of the Education Board, Messrs. H. S. W. King, T. U. Wells and W. J. Campbell, was welcomed by Mr. T. H. Hubber, chairman of the school committee.

Mr. Hubber said the ceremony was the culmination of their efforts during the past four years. The committee had put a good deal of work into the scheme and had received every assistance from the board. Mr. Burns said the board and the committee had been greatly assisted by the interest and enthusiasm of parents and residents, who had provided a large sum in voluntary contributions, and who had done much of the actual labour required to beautify the school grounds. The growth of the district, he said, was reflected in the growth of the school. In 1920 it had been erected on a sire two acres in extent, and in 1922 and again in 1925, it had been necessary to make additions of two rooms. In 1924 another three acres of land had been added to the grounds. At the close of the ceremony Mr. Burns presented the dux prizes gained in 1927 to Enid Walker, who won Mrs. Hubber’s medal, and Brian Blake, who won Mr. M. Miller’s medal.
